The Science Behind the Sounds

Each of the Sonic Vitamins recordings uses specially generated sounds to interact with your brainwaves. The sounds are created using binaural beats and isochronic tones, scientifically proven to help you reach particular states of mind.

Binaural beats are generated when two frequencies sound together, creating a third vibration at a specific (but different) frequency. Isochronic tones work by using tiny pulses to recreate a specific frequency.

When the brain hears these frequencies, it "entrains" itself to them, shifting your brainwave patterns. This can help induce states of relaxation, creativity, super-learning, or even mood elevation.

So if you'd like to get all the benefits of deep sleep and recharge your batteries, you can listen to a particular frequency recording. If you want to encourage your ability to focus, you can listen to another. And because we know which frequency range produces which results, we’re able to tailor-make the recordings to suit your needs.

You can’t hear them!
The frequencies we’re talking about are below the normal range of human hearing, which is between 20 and 20,000 Hz. That’s why they have to be cloaked within the beautiful, relaxing soundtracks you’ll hear on the Sonic Vitamins recordings. If you simply try to listen to the frequencies on their own, you just won’t be able to hear them.

We know, for example, that the alpha frequency range between 8 and 12 Hz is present when people are in “the Zone,” completely focused and alert. By skilfully combining two proven scientific entrainment methods - binaural beats and isochronic tones - it’s possible to recreate a state of mind where positive thinking and super-learning can take place.

So if you can’t hear the frequencies, how can they work?
You can't hear the frequencies directly. Instead, the frequencies are created inside the mind, due to the audio patterns in the recording. Using binaural beats and isochronic tones, a specific frequency is played to the brain, which the brain then follows. This is known as entrainment.

This brainwave entrainment process can help
induce states of relaxation, creativity or energy. It's all about knowing which frequency or frequencies to target, to induce specific states of mind.

Although we say someone is in the alpha stage, or the delta stage, it’s not always as simple as that. Other frequencies will always exist alongside a dominant frequency, and certain patterns of listening will induce certain types of experiences. For example, going deep, then spiking up to a higher frequency can bring about "creative flashes."

We can further analyze these patterns and learn more about brainwaves (the brain’s electrical activity) using EEG (electroencephalography) technology.

What EEG technology tells us
Using an EEG it’s possible to demonstrate brainwave activity at these lower frequencies.  The frequencies most commonly apparent are categorized into four distinct “states” as follows:

Frequency Range

State of Mind

0.5 Hz - 4 Hz

Deep sleep

4 Hz - 8 Hz

Drowsiness (also first stage of sleep)

8 Hz - 14 Hz

Relaxed but alert

14 Hz - 30 Hz

Highly alert and focused

You can see from the table that 4 Hz is the higher end of the delta range and also the lower end of the theta range. A binaural beat resonating at 2.5 Hz, for example, would represent mostly delta wave activity, although it is possible to enter the theta zone at times. This should not cause concern, as both are related to drowsiness and sleep.

These “states of mind” have been shown to exist time and time again in numerous tests and procedures. We also know that these states influence the way our bodies and minds behave, making it possible for us to sleep deeply, focus intensely, meditate, study, dream, and so on. Here’s a general guide to what you might accomplish by syncing your brain up to a particular frequency range:

Amazingly, once your brain gets used to syncing itself up in this way, you’ll be able to reach the state you desire even more quickly. Find out how you can ‘train your brain” in this manner on the following page.
